Upper School Counseling
First Year Initiative (FYI)
The Upper School is excited to continue the highly successful FYI (First Year Initiative) into the 2016-2017 academic year. The program prepares 10 carefully selected role models from the junior class to serve throughout their senior year as highly visible student advisors to the freshman class.
The FYI advisors form a close-knit, spirited, and fun-driven team that reflects the student body's diversity of interests and experience. Their primary goal is to ensure that the freshman year experience is as positive as possible for every student in the ninth grade. These advisors are selected in the Spring of their Junior year and they receive leadership training before heading into their Senior year. The leadership training helps to unite the group and provide solid leadership skills that enhance their ability to guide and work with the incoming Freshman. The biggest FYI event is the Freshman trip. The advisors plan, organize and run the fall trip that the entire Freshman class attends. These advisors plan everything from the activities and themes as well as organizing supplies and managing logistics.
Throughout the remainder of the year, the FYI team plans and leads on and off-campus events for the entire 9th grade (e.g., movies in the Quad, Ice Den outing, Haunted House, etc.) and generally supports the freshmen throughout their first year in the Upper School.
