Middle School Counseling
You and Others Curriculum

Currently in YO, the 5th - graders are finishing up exploring gender stereotypes and gender roles.  Students should be able to define and explain the difference between gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation and biological sex using the Genderbread Person.   We also have our Gender Empowerment Day coming up April 25th.  There is more information about that below.  The next unit will be tobacco education and media literacy.    Lastly the 5th graders will be heading into the Human Sexuality unit and will be watching Dr. D's Birds and the Bees and the Puberty Workshop program.  During these videos students will write down questions on notescards.  Those notecard questions will be taken and answered in single gender groups on Tuesday, May 9th during advisory time.   The 6th grade students are also talking about gender stereotypes and exploring how we internalize stereotypes and the impact they can have.   We then discuss assumptions around identity and the way people look and introduce implicit bias.  We will be using the program Don't Guess My Race if you would like to look up the program.   Lastly, the 6th graders will be moving into the Human Sexuality Unit and writing down questions that will be answered in single gender space on Tuesday May 15th during advisory time.  The 7th - graders are on the topic of sexuality education including learning about healthly relationships and sexually transmitted diseases.  Please see the letter that was sent home and that is posted on our resource page for further details.  The 8th graders are on the topic of learning more about different ways people identify and respecting those identities. We will explore race, gender, sexual orientation and ability/disability in more depth.  We will end the year with our human sexuality education unit. Details on what we will cover this year are posted on the resource page and was also emailed in a letter home.

Our 5th grade gender empowerment program is happening on Tuesday, April 25th.  The goal of this day is to highlight the gender stereotypes that we have been discussing in class and raise awareness of how they can play out at school and in our lives.  Our goal is to resist and reject those rigid gender roles we learn and introduce more inclusive and empowering thoughts and language.  The students have been brainstorming ideas to impliment for that day.  The students can choose to wear a clothing color that doesn't follow gender stereotypes (boys - pink and purple, girls - blue and red).  We will also do some empowering activities during the advisory time.  During lunch the students will sit in mixed gender spaces and will explore questions centered around gender.  We will also offer gender neutral activites or ask students to participate in activities that are usually divided along gender lines.  It should be a fun day and the kids seem very excited.  Thanks for your support and please be in touch with questions. 

We want Phoenix Country Day School to be a safe place for children to grow academically and emotionally.  You and Others (YO) classes give students the opportunity to explore individual values and interpersonal skills through class discussions, video presentations, and group activities.

Several core themes run throughout the four-year program: increased self-esteem, respect for differences, positive leadership, decision-making, and coping skills, and an appreciation for group dynamics and interaction.  Because these areas overlap, class presentations often address more than one of these themes. While students are encouraged to participate in activities, the class honors an individual’s right to privacy.  Throughout, our goal is to foster respect for self and others within the school, local, and larger communities.
