Program Information

EXTENDED DAY
Phoenix Country Day School’s Extended Day program serves both Lower School and Middle School students. Extended Day is staffed by PCDS personnel and provides students an option for after-school care and supervision in a familiar setting.

CREATIVE KIDS (ART)

Creative Kids is an after-school art program for students in grades K-4. Students engage with Lower School art teacher Michelle Gurnee in independent exploration and guided practice in drawing, painting, and found-object collage assemblages. Evolving themes and the use of a variety of media give students the opportunity to have fun through discovery and creativity. Classes for students in grades K-1 meet on Mondays. Classes for students in grades 2-4 meet on Thursdays. All classes meet 3:00-4:15 p.m. in the Lower School art room (F28).

CHESS CLUB

Arizona Chess Central presents Creative Thinking Through Chess! Students in kindergarten through fourth grade meet during Session 1, and students in pre-k through fourth grade have fun during Sessions 2-4 when they join Certified Chess Master Michael Reading and his team for group instruction, chess computer lab, one-on-one instruction, and peer instruction utilizing Coach Reading’s proven curriculum. Chess Club meets on Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30 p.m. in Burch Hall.

PCDS CHILDREN’S CHOIR

The PCDS Children’s Choir is for students in grades 3-4. This is an optional extracurricular activity that is held Friday mornings before school and with a few extra scheduled rehearsals before performances. Auditions are held the first week of school and in January.

CODING AND MINECRAFT

Founded by PCDS alumnus David Dodge (’86), CodaKid is a computer science and game design academy exclusively for children. Their dynamic computer programming and video game design classes use cutting-edge tools such as Minecraft ®, Forge, Eclipse, Blender, and more. Professional coding instructors know how to make coding entertaining as they encourage discovery, creative expression, and presentation. CodaKid meets on Fridays, 2:05-3:30 p.m. in the Lower School Computer Lab (E10).

FUN IN THE FOOTLIGHTS - NEW!

Does your child have a flair for dramatics? This theatre class will allow students to develop techniques used by actors and performers of all ages by focusing on theatre games which will help build self-confidence, fluency, and presentation skills. Students will have fun learning lines and developing characters. Classes meet on Mondays, 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Ms. Sucato's classroom, E12.

JUST DANCE! - NEW!

Students will learn to express themselves through the art of movement and dance. Through a combination of jazz, ballet, and hip-hop techniques, this class will encourage students to foster discipline, a positive attitude, flexibility, and skills that can be useful in other areas of life. Just Dance! is open to dancers with or without experience. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, 3:00-4:00 p.m in the LS Music Room (L173). A healthy snack will be provided.

LEGO ENGINEERING & STEM

Play-Well TEKnologies offers LEGO-inspired engineering classes for children ages 4-10. Students get added inspiration from specially trained instructors as they dive into a massive collection of LEGO. And while they build elaborate objects, structures, and vehicles, they explore fundamental principles of engineering and physics. They also learn to collaborate and create without fear of mistakes. Classes meeting on Wednesdays, 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Dining Hall.

MAESTRO TODDLERS!

Explore your child’s love of music through musical play! Maestro Toddlers! is a music and movement class for children, approximately 18-42 months old, who are accompanied by a participating parent or caregiver. Through a variety of activities, children and adults together experience singing, playing instruments, and moving to music. Music creates an awakening of a child’s musical aptitude that will enhance development in rhythm, melody, beat, and music listening. All classes meet on Tuesdays, 8:15-9:00 a.m., in the Phoenix Country Day School Lower School music room (L173).

MATH MAGIC!

Math Magic is an after-school enrichment program for Lower School students in grades 2-3. With guidance from Lower School Learning Specialist Kim Wass, students will explore important mathematical concepts and build skills through the use of engaging games pulled from the Investigations curriculum. Students will also have fun solving meaningful problems while focusing on expanding their mathematical thinking. All activities are designed to provide opportunities for students to develop and deepen their mathematical understanding and reasoning. Classes meet on Thursdays, 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Lower School library, E7.

¡HOLA! SPANISH CULTURE FOR CHILDREN
Lower School students can join Spanish teacher Señor Álvaro Otálora for ¡Hola! Spanish Culture for Children. This after-school program gives children an opportunity to practice and enjoy the Spanish language through games and storytelling. Students in grades 2-4 will also use various technologies to reinforce their understanding of Spanish language concepts. Classes for students in grades 2-4 meet on Mondays. Classes for students in grades pre-k–1 meet on Thursdays. All classes meet 3:00-4:15 p.m. in the Lower School Spanish room (E12).

EAGLE AFTER-SCHOOL SWIM
Eagle After-School Swim provides swimmers at various levels an opportunity to learn proper stroke fundamentals, experience low-key competition, and have fun. Blue Group swimmers must be able to swim 20 feet. Gold Group swimmers must be able to swim freestyle stroke for 25 yards and backstroke or breaststroke for another 25 yards. Students will be assigned to the Blue Group or Gold Group according to PE swimming. Assignments will be confirmed before after-school classes begin, and changes may be made during the session, if necessary. Program Director Danny Majeski is also a Lower School PE teacher. He holds certifications in water safety, first aid, and CPR and is a member of the National Association of Swim Coaches.

CHILDREN'S YOGA
Students in grades pre-k through fourth grade will develop the skills for a lifetime of health and wellness in both mind and body when they practice Children’s Yoga with Lower School Second Grade Assistant Kat Burrell. Ms. Burrell will guide the children through a fun practice that encourages physical flexibility, balance, and coordination. Emphasis will be on helping children relax while developing focus and concentration, all while boosting confidence and self-esteem. Classes for grades Pre-k - 1 meet on Fridays, 1:45-2:45 p.m. Yoga mats and a healthy snack will be provided.

Registration is limited on a  first come, first served basis. Any child not picked up within 10 minutes from the end of the program will go to the PCDS Extended Day program. Your PCDS account will be charged the Extended Day daily drop-in rate of $35, unless your child is on a pre-registered Extended Day package, which covers his/her Extended Day attendance. Lower School Extended Day is located in room F20 (602.381.4534).
