B&G Relief - UPDATE

Thank you to everyone that donated, and helped box up the donations for our Blue & Gold relief drive. The event was a huge success! Over 2000 items, filling 55 boxes will be sent to the devastated areas.

B&G Relief

The Upper School is organizing a donation drive to help our neighbors in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico affected by hurricanes and our friends in Mexico devastated by an earthquake. The items we collect will help support the relief efforts for organizations we are working with in each location. Please consider bringing in items on the wish list to help our neighbors. We will collect items during Blue + Gold week.

Attendance Procedure Reminder

Parents are required to call the Upper School office (602-381-4523) by 8:00 am to report an absence, lateness, or the need for early departure; a message is to be left if there is no answer. A text message or email message will not be considered appropriate notification. Students may not call in to report their own absences.  Calling in late to the nurse or a faculty member is not acceptable.  The failure to report an absence or tardy will result in an unexcused absence and potential detention or disciplinary action.  It is the responsibility of students and families to arrive to school on time.  Students whose absence is not school related and who do not arrive by the beginning of Block 2 will lose their right to participate in that day’s athletic and extracurricular programs.

Student Dining Hall and US Café Purchases

Families with Upper School students are provided accounts with MyKidsSpending (MKS) to manage student spending and to directly fund their purchases. (NEW FAMILIES: An email was sent on August 8 to parents of students new to the Upper School (except for those parents who already have accounts), with program details and login information. If neither parent received the email, please email info@pcds.org.) MKS works similar to many other debit card systems with a preloaded dollar amount. The system provides the capability to review the details of a child's spending, place limits on how much is spent, request statements, and auto-fund the account when the balance gets low. Buttons on the screen after one logs in provide access to these functions. Log in from www.mykidsspending.com.

New Parents' Reception
Reminder of the New Parents' Reception this Thursday, August 31 from 5:30-7pm in the Shin Center for Art, Science & Innovation.  This adult-only event is for all new parents or parents with a child new to PCDS this school year.  Please check your emails and invitation for details.

Summer Reading notes for Juniors

Rising juniors are expected to read and annotate Toni Morrison's A Mercy over the summer for English III. They are encouraged to trace instances of at least one of the novel's major themes: slavery and freedom, religion, love, home and family, or mercy. Students may want to refer to the attached PDF, which was distributed in late May, both for additional elaboration of the novel's themes and for information about the writing we will do about the novel in the first quarter.

Visitors to Campus

For the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, we are requiring all visitors to campus, including parents, to sign in and sign out when they arrive and leave campus. Visitors to the Upper School must sign in and sign out at the Upper School office. This is imperative in order to ensure correct accounting of a person's whereabouts on campus in the event of a drill or emergency. All visitors must wear visitor identification throughout their time on campus. While we understand that these steps require additional effort on behalf of our visitors, they are essential to the safety and accountability of our campus community.

Safe Driving Information & Driving Contract

The PCDS Upper School wants to provide families with as much help as possible in our joint effort to keep new, inexperienced student drivers safe. Getting behind the wheel of a car for the first time is a big event in the lives of sixteen-year-olds and often a big worry for parents. Below are two websites that feature a driving contract along with further information on teen driving.

Parking Lot Safety and High School Drivers

Parents and students: Please take a moment to read this article about parking lot safety, including what to do if you are ever in an accident. Very good information to keep in mind.
