LS Health Alert and Event Information

As you know, this week we have been working to contain the spread of what appears to be a viral gastrointestinal illness, like norovirus, among students here in the Lower School. Our faculty, staff, and professional cleaning crew have been diligently cleaning and disinfecting our classrooms, playground equipment, bathrooms, desks, toys, keyboards, etc. Everything is being continually cleaned and sanitized, down to the very last LEGO.

First of all, thank you so much for your flexibility, cooperation, and patience this week as we’ve all had to make countless difficult decisions. Once again, this community has proven itself to be resilient and conscientious, willing to do whatever is necessary to keep our children safe.

There have been many emails sent in the last week and, due to the sheer volume of communications, we want make sure everyone is equally aware of this week’s Lower School schedule.

  • There will be no Community Meetings this week.
  • There are no after-school programs this week in an effort to prevent grade levels from comingling. Families will be receiving refunds for these canceled Art, Chess, Dance, Spanish, and Theatre classes.
  • Extended Day is available today, Tuesday, February 13 and tomorrow, Wednesday, February 14. Because Thursday is now a noon dismissal, we will not be offering Extended Day on Thursday.
  • No Valentine’s Day Class Parties will be held on Wednesday, which also means no food, decorations, etc. should be brought to campus.
  • No Valentine’s Day cards are to be distributed whatsoever. We understand that families have gone to great lengths to prepare cards; however, the risk of the virus being spread via cards that were prepared while the student was ill or in the incubation period is too great. Additionally, please do not have children exchange cards outside of school as the same possible spreading of germs could occur.
  • Track & Field Day has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.
  • NOON DISMISSAL - Thursday, February 15 (There will be no bus available for bus riders. There will be snack in the morning, but no lunch will be served. LS Faculty and Staff will be leaving campus as soon as all students have been picked up or accounted for.)
  • Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.
  • NO SCHOOL – Friday, February 16. LS Faculty and Staff will not be on campus.
  • NO SCHOOL – Monday, February 19 for Presidents’ Day

We hope that this adjusted schedule will allow for more quality time with grandparents and special friends who may be visiting this weekend, and for there to be a continued decline in students contracting this virus.

Playground Supervision

Lower School students may enjoy the playground before and after school while being ACTIVELY supervised by a parent or adult guardian. Our expectations are that parents provide close supervision by standing either next to children in play areas or standing on the playground sidewalk surrounding the sand/play-structure area. We expect all eyes, at all times, to be on the children, even when engaged in conversation with the other parents. Children younger than 4 are not allowed on the play-structure as it is only safe for children 4 years and older. These expectations for child supervision are the same after school as they are during the school day. Please join us in supporting the young members of our community in being safe while on campus.

Modified Arrival and Dismissal Procedures for the Spring

Traffic flow and drop-off/pick-up locations in the Stanford Lot will not change. However, once you drop off your Lower School child just as you have been doing, students will be directed to enter and exit the campus via the pre-k gate entrance instead of the main gate.

In the afternoon, students will be waiting for you in the same designated waiting area that we have been using all year, the coned area in the center of the parking lot. These changes mean increased student foot traffic through the pre-k gate, but not increased parking lot traffic near the pre-k gate. We ask that you continue to be respectful and mindful of our reserved parking spaces near the pre-k gate which will continue to be for pre-k parents only.

The pre-k gate will only be open in the morning and afternoons just like the main gate has always been. If you need to come to campus during the day, you will still sign in at the temporary administration office and then you will enter campus through the Lower School Office. We appreciate all your help and support.

1:45 pm Friday Dismissal Time for Pre-k, Kindergarten, and First Grade

We will be dismissing our youngest students, those in pre-k, kindergarten, and first grades, at 1:45 p.m. on Fridays only. If you only have children in pre-k, kindergarten, and/or first grade, you are encouraged to pick them up at the new 1:45 p.m. dismissal time on Fridays. If you have children in pre-k, kindergarten, and/or first grade, as well as children in second, third, and/or fourth grade, or Middle School, we ask that you arrive at 2:00 p.m. because those higher grade levels will continue to dismiss at our regular time of 2:05 p.m. on Fridays. We hope this change will alleviate some of the pressure in the parking lot.

To ensure accurate attendance records for your child, please sign-in/out with the LS Office if arriving after 7:50 a.m. or picking your child up early. Thank you!

Illnesses - 24 Hour Rule

Following Maricopa County guidelines, children who have a fever over 100, have vomited, and/or have had diarrhea may not return to school until symptoms have ceased, without medication, for 24 hours. If your child is taking antibiotics for a contagious illness such as strep throat or pink eye, s/he must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school. More details on Medical Absences can be found in the LS Student/Parent Handbook.

Grade Reps Announcements

Contact information and announcements from your LS grade reps can now be found on the Grade Reps Announcements web pages for grades K-4. Please watch these pages for updates from your grade reps throughout the year.

Morning Arrival

If you arrive on campus before 7:30 a.m., please stay with your child until our classroom doors open. There is no supervision by faculty prior to 7:30 a.m. and our nurses are not on campus until after 7:45 for emergencies. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe!

Reporting Absences

If a student must be absent, communication should be made directly with the Lower School Office (602-381-4527 or LSoffice@pcds.org) before 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence to inform us of the reason for this absence. When the absence extends beyond two days, parents may request schoolwork for the child, if appropriate. Informing your child’s teachers of an absence does not replace communication with the LS office.
